The primary roles of the Board of Directors are to support successful growth, innovation, and execution of the annual Reaching Out MBA Conference and to coordinate long-term strategic and financial planning for the organization. Comprised entirely of former conference organizers, the Board provides context, institutional memory, and lessons learned from conferences past, while leaving the authority and responsibility of the conference and programming to the current organizing committee.
With respect to long-term planning, the Board works to grow the capabilities of the evolving organization to better serve its mission. Goals include, among others: establishing long-term financial sustainability; developing continuous relationships with organizations, companies, and individuals; and broadening the reach and impact of LGBT MBA interaction.

David Cavanaugh began his tenure with Reaching Out MBA, Inc. back in 2005 as an organizer of the Chicago 2005 conference.Upon graduating from the Kellogg School of Management in 2006, David joined L.E.K. Consulting as a consultant specializing in their life sciences practice. Prior to Kellogg, David worked for a diverse set of biomedical research organizations, including Genentech and GlaxoSmithKline, in the emerging field of Bioinformatics.In his free time, David enjoys triathlons, international traveling, cooking, and dining.

Erik Hebert currently works in Hewlett-Packard’s Strategy & Corporate Development group based in Palo Alto focusing primarily on software strategy and acquisitions. Prior to HP, Erik worked as an investment banker for boutique firm Savvian Advisors in San Francisco and Morgan Stanley in New York. Erik helped run the 2007 Reaching Out MBA conference in San Francisco with fellow students from Berkeley and Stanford. Erik holds a BA in Economics from Princeton University and an MBA from UC Berkeley. In his spare time, Erik is an avid masters swimmer and enjoys the many outdoor activities available living in Northern California.

Ian Tzeng is an Engagement Manager in the Boston office of L.E.K. Consulting and originally joined the company in 1998. He splits his time between practice areas in life sciences, private equity, and hospitality & travel. Ian holds an A.B., magna cum laude in Chemistry from Harvard College and is a George F. Baker Scholar, M.B.A. with high distinction from Harvard Business School. He also serves on the boards of two other non-profit organizations - the HGC Foundation, a Harvard alumni organization supporting choral music education; and Coro Allegro, a Boston-area LGBT chorus. Ian was an organizer of the Boston 2005 Conference.

James Robertson, MPH, MBA, is a Senior HIV/AIDS Advisor at John Snow, Inc., a Boston-based international health consultancy. He serves as a technical focal point for HIV prevention and as senior advisor to JSI’s portfolio of bilateral HIV/AIDS programs in Africa and Central Asia. Before joining JSI, he was Project Manager (Africa) in the Global Health Initiative of the World Economic Forum in Geneva, Switzerland where he contributed to efforts to expand the private sector’s response to the epidemic. In 1999, while at Yale School of Management, James was a founding co-chair of the Reaching Out conference.

James Temple owns and operates Mathnasium of Richmond located in Richmond, Virginia. He graduated from the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business and joined the ROMBA Board of Directors in 2009. After receiving a B.A. in Mathematics from the University of Virginia in 2000, James was commissioned as an officer in the United State Air Force. During his seven years in the Air Force, James traveled the world in support of weapon system acquisition and aircraft maintenance. As a member of the 2008 Reaching Out MBA Conference organizing committee, James developed a deep appreciation for the goals and mission of the Reaching Out MBA organization. He has a particular interest in MBA admissions and making sure LGBT applicants are adequately prepared for the admissions process. James is a certified Master Scuba Diver and has logged over 75 dives in the South Pacific.

Prior to business school, Jonah produced feature films at Warner Bros. and the Walt Disney Company and held product management roles at Creative Planet and Edmunds Inc. He is a graduate of Brown University (BA in American Civilization; Phi Beta Kappa) and from USC Marshall School of Business (MBA).

Katy Means is a 2010 MBA candidate at the Georgia Tech College of Management. Prior to her MBA, Katy spent two years working in admission and recruitment at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta. Originally from Atlanta, Katy pursued her undergraduate degree in astronomy at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, during which time she also spent a semester living and studying at the University of Tasmania in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. After graduating from Smith in 2006, Katy returned to Atlanta where she lives with her partner and dogs Elsa and Abbie. Through a contact she made at the 2008 Reaching Out LGBT MBA Conference, Katy spent her summer interning with the Humana Infusion program, working with HR Benefits and Policy.

Kevin W. Smith is VP-Strategy at HNW, Inc., a marketing consultancy in New York City. He serves as a marketing strategist to HNW’s client base developing marketing strategy solutions for luxury and financial services brands. Before joining HNW, Kevin spent ten years in the world of advertising, working with clients such as Coca-Cola, Intel, DirecTV, and Disney. Kevin holds a BA in Economics from George Washington University and an MBA from NYU-Stern School of Business. Kevin was a Co-Chair of the 2006 Reaching Out LGBT MBA Conference in New York.


Seth Miller is a 2010 MBA candidate at Emory University’s Goizueta Business School. Prior to attending Goizueta, Seth was Assistant Dean of Admission at Emory University’s Office of Undergraduate Admission. Along with sitting on the admission committee and recruiting, his responsibilities included running the main admission website, electronic communications with prospective students, and managing the transfer admission process. Seth also attended Emory as an undergraduate where he majored in Economics. In his spare time, Seth is an instructor for a local boot camp fitness program and he enjoys competing in 10K to half-marathon races on weekends.

William is a 2010 candidate at the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. He is the co-president of Fuqua Pride (LGBT Student Association), wealth management chair of the Finance Club, and the alumni relations director of the Real Estate Club. Prior to Duke, William lived in New York where he worked for E&Y in audit & tax, Goldman Sachs in wealth management, and ran his own CPA business. This past summer, WIlliam was an intern at JP Morgan Private Bank in New York City.
