Meet the LGBT MBA Fellows: Derek Jackman

Posted by / in LGBTQ BUSINESS STUDENT BLOG / No comments yet

The Reaching Out LGBT MBA Fellowship is a scholarship and leadership development program for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and active ally MBAs in full-time programs. Each Fellows receives at least $10,000 funding per academic year (or $20,000 total for his/her/their two years) in addition free lifetime access to all Reaching Out programming (including the ROMBA Conference), LGBT mentors, and a leadership summit exclusively for the Fellows.

This fall Reaching Out welcomed the second class of the Reaching Out LGBT MBA Fellows. These 44 fellows come from 30 top business schools and over the next month we’ll introduce each of them to you.

35 MBA programs will be part of the Fellowship for the 2016-2017 application cycle. To learn about the Fellowship and let schools know of your interest here.

MEET DEREK JACKMAN (Carnegie Mellon University, Tepper School of Business)

Originally from Brockton, MA, Derek headed south to Pittsburgh to study Civil Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. Upon graduating in 2009, he pursued a career in financial services (bridges everywhere are safer as a result), taking a role at Freddie Mac in the company’s Advanced Analytics group. A year later he left for a direct-investment role at Boston-based Eaton Vance Management as a bond analyst where he covered a variety of industries including REITs, homebuilders, and gaming.  When not working, Derek can be found making a splash with LANES, Bostons LGBT swim team. He also enjoys running, yoga, trying new and strange restaurants, learning about architecture and design, and overfeeding people at dinner parties.

What made you consider business school?
Coming from a largely technical background, I always felt that something was missing in my skill set. As I progressed in my career I came to realize the something missing was a more global perspective. For me, getting an MBA is a transformative experience. Ill have the opportunity to not only learn about all the different business disciplines, Ill also be immersed into a mix of cultures and new ways of thinking that will prepare me to take on challenging leadership roles in the future.

What are you most excited about in terms of your time in business school?
It’s got to be the people, no question. There are very few opportunities in life where you get to surround yourself with so many driven people from all over the world with backgrounds and experiences so vastly different from your own. During the next two years, I’m excited to learn from my classmates stories and hopefully travel and experience some of what I’ve heard about first hand!

Who are some leaders (in business, in the LGBT community, in society) that most inspire you?
Tim Cook, Harvey Milk, Laverne Cox

What’s one thing everyone should know about you?
Kiwis are both my favorite fruit and my favorite animal.
