In February, members of Wharton’s Out4Business volunteered with the local hunger relief charity, Philabundance. Philabundance brings food to over 90,000 people per week in the Delaware Valley area, which includes Philadelphia. The program relies on volunteers’ time to provide food to children, seniors, persons with disabilities, veterans, single parents, students, and working-class families. The day gave Out4Business volunteers the opportunity to give back to the Philadelphia community as well as build stronger connections with each other.
Wharton students love Philadelphia and the Out4Business volunteers were excited to help alleviate hunger in the city while experiencing a new neighborhood. It was meaningful to see hundreds of crates of canned food, milk, cereal and other nonperishables, and to know that volunteering played a part in feeding neighbors in Philadelphia. Out4Business volunteers were also happy to connect with other service-minded local community members. Joining the assembly line with Philadelphians gave Out4Business volunteers a deep sense of community in the City of Brotherly Love.

An unexpected delight in the day was the opportunity to build stronger connections with fellow Out4Business members. Loading food into boxes on an assembly line left mindspace to talk, and the volunteers told each other coming out stories, gave and received relationship advice, and described hopes and plans for the future. Volunteers learned a lot about each other from these meaningful conversations and look forward to spending more time together on campus.

Wharton’s Out4Business is grateful for the six student volunteers’ time and the support of ROMBA’s Month of Service. Out4Business recently added a Community Service position to its Board, and hopes to plan additional service events throughout the year to benefit the Philadelphia community as well as build stronger relationships with club members.

Six Wharton MBA students spent a day working in Philabundance’s South Philly Hunger Relief Center, packaging non-perishable food items for distribution throughout the Philadelphia area.

Each day, dozens of volunteers and groups keep the hunger relief center going. Here, two Out4Business members load boxes in the main room of the facility.

Out4Business members got together wearing their “Pride at Wharton” t-shirts to spend time together while helping the community.

Thank you, Out4Business!
