Standing with Duke Fuqua and UNC Kenan-Flagler Against HB2

We at Reaching Out MBA want to express our support and solidarity for our schools in North Carolina  in the wake of the passage of House Bill 2. We know that the passage of HB2 is damaging, but we want to stand in strength with our students, leaders, and clubs at the Kenan-Flagler School of Business at UNC and the Fuqua School of Business at Duke.

Fuqua Pride and UNC Kenan-Flagler Pride Club have each spoken out against the anti-LGBT legislation, noting that #WeAreBetterThanThis. We know, and our students know, that laws like this are not what North Carolina is about. Below are the public statements from Fuqua Pride and UNC Kenan-Flagler Pride Club.

 

Statement from FuquaPride and its Allies at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business:

FuquaPride, the Duke MBA LGBT network, in conjunction with Fuqua’s student government, the MBA Association, as well with our allies in the MBA Association of Women in Business and the Black and Latino MBA Association, is deeply troubled by North Carolina’s regressive HB2 law. Today, we publicly reconfirm our commitment to growing and maintaining the Fuqua value of Collective Diversity that keeps “Team Fuqua” special and a transformative experience for its members. The installation of a gender neutral bathroom, the success of all FuquaPride events (including the sold-out annual drag show), and the prioritizing of LGBT admissions efforts are proof to the inclusive and thriving environment for LGBT students at Fuqua and of our school’s support. This law will not change that.

We can’t change this legislation tomorrow, but we do have the power – through our hearts and our actions – to send a signal today to North Carolina that as members of Team Fuqua and other leading MBA programs #WeAreBetterThanThis.

 

As student representatives at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, we condemn the actions taken by the North Carolina General Assembly and Governor Pat McCrory to pass House Bill 2 into law. HB2 intentionally excludes the LGBT community and veterans from statewide anti-discrimination protections in employment, housing, and public accommodation, and prohibits and nullifies any local law or ordinance that provides such protections. Passing this law egregiously erodes civil rights protections, endangers some of the most vulnerable members of our community, and harms the reputations and cohesion of our state, local governments, and valued institutions.

The proponents of this bill invented a moral panic out of whole cloth, depicting transgender individuals as predators intent on accessing bathrooms to assault women and children. Not only is there no record of any such thing ever occurring, but transgender people are often put in serious danger when forced to use facilities conflicting with their gender identity.

We applaud the major employers in our state that have staked out clear positions against HB2. However, we have severe concerns that the law will make it impossible for our top-ranked school to continue attracting the best students, faculty, and staff. HB2 is rapidly wearing away our state’s global reputation as a beacon of growth and innovation. As a public institution of North Carolina, UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School’s reputation will likewise suffer among prospective students, the companies that recruit our graduates, and the international business community.

Our leaders’ actions place North Carolina wholly on the wrong side of history. We choose to stand by the core values of our school: excellence, leadership, integrity, community, and teamwork, and so we implore the General Assembly and Governor McCrory to reconvene and cooperate to pass a comprehensive non-discrimination act that respects, values, and protects all of North Carolina and our people.

The Home Depot “Tools for Success” Student Scholarship to Attend ROMBA 2015!

The Home Depot is sponsoring 5 second-year MBA students to attend the 2015 Reaching Out LGBT MBA & Business Graduate Conference, Oct 8-10 in Chicago.

The selected students will receive an full conference registrations, $250 travel reimbursement plus access to the Saturday Charity Party. For more information about the ROMBA Conference please visit http://www.reachingoutmba.org

Program Rules and Procedures 

· Applicants for this student scholarship must be enrolled full-time in an accredited business school program in the U.S. or Canada at the time of application and award. Please be advised that this scholarship is for currently enrolled college/university students who are in the second year of a full-time MBA or related graduate degree. Applicants must be able to attend the conference in Chicago and must be able to be physically present at the convention in its entirety from Oct 8-10.

· Deadline for submission/application: Wednesday, Sept 9th, 2015 midnight, 11:59 PM U.S. Eastern Standard Time

· Who is eligible? Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students who are in entering their second year of a fulltime MBA or related graduate degree in full-time program at an accredited business school in the U.S. or Canada at the time of application and award.

· To submit your interest, please send an email to info@reachingoutmba.org containing the following information:

1. Full name
2. City, State and Country you are currently located in
3. Contact information: email and phone
4. Name of business school that you are enrolled as a full-time student.
5. Anticipated graduation month/year.
6. State your status as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT)
7. Confirm that if selected, you can attend the ROMBA Conference in full from Oct 8-10 (in your email, simply state a “YES” beside this statement)
8. Confirm that if selected and notified by Reaching Out, you can and will respond within 48 hours to indicate if you will accept this scholarship
9. Write and submit (or include in the body of the e-mail) a brief essay (max 300 words) in response to this question:

What have you done to demonstrate that you are BOLD, a DREAMER, an INNOVATOR and a PROBLEM SOLVER?  Note that The Home Depot website www.careers.homedepot.com/next speaks to these as qualities they are seeking in employment candidates.

· When the selected students are notified (on or before September 14, 2015) the student must respond within 48 hours to acknowledge their acceptance of the scholarship, and provide evidence that travel arrangements have been made to attend the convention.  Otherwise, the scholarship may be reassigned to another student who can attend.

· E-mail your submission to info@reachingoutmba.org no later than September 9, 2015 (11:59 PM U.S. Eastern Standard Time).  Selected students will be notified no later than September 8th.

Announcing Two Fall Treks for LGBT MBAs & Business Graduate Students!

Building on the success of our series of Summer Treks for Admitted LGBT MBA & graduate students, we will add two fall treks for 2015 with one in Boston (Nov 6) and one in Seattle (Nov 13).

These treks are designed to be a learning experience about companies and job opportunities for LGBTQA MBAs in specific cities that they may want to live in.  Our hope is that attendees will leave with a better understand of their options, a broader network in these cities and companies, and an expanded peer network. Last year multiple students attending treks ended up receiving job offers from companies they visited.

Attendance to the trek is done by application only with an absolute maximum of 20 attendees. All attendees must be current LGBT or active ally MBAs/business graduate students.

Companies that on the Boston trek include Biogen, Deloitte, Liberty Mutual, P&G.  Companies that may be featured on the Seattle trek include Amazon, Microsoft & Starbucks.  We will confirm Seattle companies over the coming month.
