ROMBA Student Organizer Profile: Kati Karottki

In addition to Reaching Out’s staff, each year the Reaching Out LGBT MBA & Business Graduate Conference’s content is developed and produced by MBA & graduate students from schools across the world. These core group of the students working on the ROMBA Conference are known as the “Student Organizing Committee.”  The Organizing Committee comes up with the conference’s theme, ideates all breakout sessions, and is seen prominently on the ground at the conference!

Over the next few weeks we’ll highlight each of this year’s 8 organizers and share some of their tips for those planning to attend this year’s LGBT MBA & Business Graduate Conference!  Not only will they tell you what they are most excited about for this year’s conference, but they’ll also give readers tips on the summer internship search & experience!

What you’re most excited about for ROMBA 2015?

The keynotes are always fabulous – this year I think they will be as good as ever. I’m biased but if you’re up for a morning session on how to build a venture, Prof. Waverly Deutsch is an absolute rock-star in the space. I also think we’ll do some exciting content for the Women’s session on Thursday leading into the broader conference.

What advice do you have for students, particularly those recruiting, going to ROMBA 2015 in Chicago?

Do your research on companies that are sponsoring, speakers and guests that are participating, and companies that are recruiting in order to bring some focus and maximize your efforts. You’ll have an opportunity to meet so many great people whom you’ll cross paths with again – be it sooner or later!

What experience(s) do you hope to take away from your Internship?

I want to do a day in the life of the distributor and ride along in the beer trucks to pick-up and delivery product to key accounts in and around the city. Tremendous go-pro opportunity!

How did your first year in business school prepare you for your summer?

I think the combination and load of extracurricular activities and coursework taught me quickly how to prioritize, manage my time, and figure out what I wanted to get out of the experience. I also helped launch a new venture (MaestroFood.co) that required lots of 1) primary research in terms of customer discovery and understanding what the consumers’ needs are, 2) business development meetings to sell in the idea, and finally 3) working and reworking of pitch decks and PPT slides… constantly… to facilitate and communicate what we knew for different audiences.

What valuable piece of advice can you offer readers going into their summer internship?

Get in there and experience everything: sit in on agency/partner meetings and conference calls, have lunch with folks from different functions or business units to understand all aspects of the business, and remember, you be you – its the best way to know if that company is a good fit for both sides.

Hannah Yankelevich Named New ‘Reaching Out’ Board President

Reaching Out is thrilled to announce that Hannah Yankelevich, an Associate at McKinsey & Company, will serve as the organization’s new Board President.  Hannah replaces Erik Hebert, Senior Director at HP Software Global Strategy & Planning, who has served as President from 2014-2015.  Erik will remain on the organization’s Board as a member at large.

Alongside the organization’s full-time Executive Director Matt Kidd, Hannah will work to ensure that the organization’s quality programming for current and alumni LGBT MBAs & graduate business students continues, while also putting renewed emphasis on programming specifically for LBT women and other under-represented segments of the LGBT community in the business and business school environments.

The organization added Robert Mark, Business Operations Manager for Apple, and Heather Rae Martin, Senior Manager of Strategy at Mylan Inc.  Reaching Out’s co-founder, James Robertson, departed the Board but will serve on a new Advisory Board made up of community partners & organizational stakeholders. The full advisory board will be named in the Fall.

Shane Proch-Wilson, a Consultant for The Boston Consulting Group, will move from member at large to the organization’s Secretary role.

Reaching Out is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to educating, inspiring and connecting LGBT business students & alumni to become the out leaders of tomorrow.  The organization is best known for its annual ROMBA Conference, which brings together over 1,400 current, prospective and alumni LGBT MBAs graduate business students along with professionals from the organization’s 80+ corporate partners.

Registration for ROMBA 2015 & the LGBT MBA Admissions Summit are open!

The ROMBA,or Reaching Out LGBT MBA & Business Graduate, Conference is the annual conference of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) graduate business school students – the largest gathering of LGBT business students in the world.

While the organization has grown year-round, the ROMBA conference is our marquee program. Now in it’s 18th conference, ROMBA launched as a conference to provide LGBT business school students with a resource to make connections with other LGBT students and business professionals. The first conference brought together about 100 LGBTQ students. Last year in 2014 over 1,400 students, prospective LGBT MBAs and business graduates, business leaders, and recruiters joined us at the 17th annual ROMBA conference in San Francisco – and we plan to continue building on that success at the ROMBA 2015 in Chicago.

The conference presents a dynamic line-up of industry speakers, workshops and panelists representing all sectors of the business community, from finance and entrepreneurship to non-profits and entertainment & media.

The 2015 Reaching Out LGBT MBA & Business Graduate Student Conference provides future lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender leaders from around the world the opportunity to network, learn, and improve their skills so they will emerge stronger and more confident in the business world.
