ROMBA Student Organizer Profile: Kati Karottki
In addition to Reaching Out’s staff, each year the Reaching Out LGBT MBA & Business Graduate Conference’s content is developed and produced by MBA & graduate students from schools across the world. These core group of the students working on the ROMBA Conference are known as the “Student Organizing Committee.” The Organizing Committee comes up with the conference’s theme, ideates all breakout sessions, and is seen prominently on the ground at the conference!
Over the next few weeks we’ll highlight each of this year’s 8 organizers and share some of their tips for those planning to attend this year’s LGBT MBA & Business Graduate Conference! Not only will they tell you what they are most excited about for this year’s conference, but they’ll also give readers tips on the summer internship search & experience!

What you’re most excited about for ROMBA 2015?
The keynotes are always fabulous – this year I think they will be as good as ever. I’m biased but if you’re up for a morning session on how to build a venture, Prof. Waverly Deutsch is an absolute rock-star in the space. I also think we’ll do some exciting content for the Women’s session on Thursday leading into the broader conference.
What advice do you have for students, particularly those recruiting, going to ROMBA 2015 in Chicago?
Do your research on companies that are sponsoring, speakers and guests that are participating, and companies that are recruiting in order to bring some focus and maximize your efforts. You’ll have an opportunity to meet so many great people whom you’ll cross paths with again – be it sooner or later!
What experience(s) do you hope to take away from your Internship?
I want to do a day in the life of the distributor and ride along in the beer trucks to pick-up and delivery product to key accounts in and around the city. Tremendous go-pro opportunity!
How did your first year in business school prepare you for your summer?
I think the combination and load of extracurricular activities and coursework taught me quickly how to prioritize, manage my time, and figure out what I wanted to get out of the experience. I also helped launch a new venture (MaestroFood.co) that required lots of 1) primary research in terms of customer discovery and understanding what the consumers’ needs are, 2) business development meetings to sell in the idea, and finally 3) working and reworking of pitch decks and PPT slides… constantly… to facilitate and communicate what we knew for different audiences.
What valuable piece of advice can you offer readers going into their summer internship?
Get in there and experience everything: sit in on agency/partner meetings and conference calls, have lunch with folks from different functions or business units to understand all aspects of the business, and remember, you be you – its the best way to know if that company is a good fit for both sides.
