Meet the LGBT MBA Fellows: Mitch Doering

Posted by / in LGBTQ BUSINESS STUDENT BLOG / No comments yet

The Reaching Out LGBT MBA Fellowship is a scholarship and leadership development program for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and active ally MBAs in full-time programs.  Each Fellows receives at least $10,000 funding per academic year in addition free lifetime access to all Reaching Out programming (including the ROMBA Conference), LGBT mentors, and a leadership summit exclusively for the Fellows.  Over 25 MBA programs will be party of the Fellowship for the 2015-2016 application cycle.  To learn how you can express interest in the Fellowship, click here

This fall Reaching Out welcomed the first class of the Reaching Out LGBT MBA Fellows.  These 25 fellows come from 18 top business schools and over the next few weeks we’ll introduce each of them to you.

Mitch grew up in Central Minnesota.  He received his Bachelor of Science in Applied Economics from the  University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.  He takes full advantage of the great outdoors in his free time by running/cycling to and from work in Minneapolis and spending as much time on the lake as possible during the warmer months.

What made you consider business school?
Growing up, I was always dead set on going to Law School.  Business school was always on my radar as a dual-degree option, but I didn’t realize how well it aligned with my career goals until I sat down with a recruiter for at the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management. I had a very candid conversation with her early on about what I was aiming to achieve.  I soon learned that business school more closely aligned with my goals – so I took the leap!

What are you most excited about in terms of your time in business school?
I’m most excited about building a new routine and many new friendships in b-school!  I learn fastest by surrounding myself with people who will challenge me to think differently both in life and business. I believe that’s exactly the kind of setting business school will immerse me in and it’s one of the reasons I’m most excited to start this fall.

Who are some leaders (in business, in the LGBT community, in society) that most inspire you?
From a business perspective, Tom Ford comes to mind for his involvement with the CFDA and his portfolio of work turning around luxury brands over the past two decades.

What are you doing during the summer before you start business school?
Professionally, I’m continuing my work at Target until August, and then taking some time off to vacation abroad before school ramps up. I’ll be continuing in my current contract role as a Social Media Curator throughout the summer and into my MBA.     Personally, I’m taking some time off to visit Tel-Aviv and Jerusalem, Israel and Istanbul, Turkey for 10 days in August, (leaving in just over 24 hours).

Announcing Two Fall Treks for LGBT MBAs & Business Graduate Students!

Posted by / in LGBTQ BUSINESS STUDENT BLOG / No comments yet

Building on the success of our series of Summer Treks for Admitted LGBT MBA & graduate students, we will add two fall treks for 2015 with one in Boston (Nov 6) and one in Seattle (Nov 13).

These treks are designed to be a learning experience about companies and job opportunities for LGBTQA MBAs in specific cities that they may want to live in.  Our hope is that attendees will leave with a better understand of their options, a broader network in these cities and companies, and an expanded peer network. Last year multiple students attending treks ended up receiving job offers from companies they visited.

Attendance to the trek is done by application only with an absolute maximum of 20 attendees. All attendees must be current LGBT or active ally MBAs/business graduate students.

Companies that on the Boston trek include Biogen, Deloitte, Liberty Mutual, P&G.  Companies that may be featured on the Seattle trek include Amazon, Microsoft & Starbucks.  We will confirm Seattle companies over the coming month.
