LGBT MBA Club Focus: Tepper’s Out&Allied Coming Out Week

Guest Blog by Jeffrey Loh, President of Carnegie Mellon Tepper’s Out&Allied

As President of Out&Allied the LGBTA club on campus, I’d like to share some of the success that we have had as an MBA community during Coming Out Week. This branded week kicks off with Pink Party, an event where everyone comes decked out in as much pink as they possibly get. My VP of Marketing, Lindsey Ray, had shared the brilliant idea of partnering with Tepper Women of Business as October was also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Over 25% of our class showed up to our local neighborhood friendly gay bar 5801 that night!

Throughout Coming Out Week, we aimed to bring awareness to our community every day through e-mails requesting our classmates complete the Friendfactor challenge and Facebook posts about the inequality that LGBT individuals continue to face.

Finally we end our week of events on Monday with Coming Out Stories where four of us including an Ally staff member, an army vet Ally, and two LGBT members shared their stories of their Coming Out process either about themselves or as Allies. At Tepper, we pride ourselves for being very relationship oriented and community focused. This event strengthens the importance of relationship building as we continue to share some of the stories, we are hoping that we convince more to become more active allies. We wish everyone at our fellow MBA programs a happy Coming Out Day. And for any prospective students that are interested about our community at Out&Allied or the Tepper School of Business, we welcome you!
