Meet the LGBTQ MBA Fellows: Ballard Metcalfe

The Reaching Out LGBT MBA Fellowship is a scholarship and leadership development program for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and active ally MBAs in full-time programs. Each Fellows receives at least $10,000 funding per academic year (or $20,000 total for his/her/their two years) in addition free access to all Reaching Out programming (including the ROMBA Conference), LGBTQ mentors, digital programming, and a leadership summit exclusively for the Fellows.  Since the inception of the ROMBA Fellowship 129 students have received over US$6.2M in scholarship support from participating schools.

This fall Reaching Out welcomed the third class of the ROMBA Fellows. These 56 fellows come from 35 top business schools and over the next month we’ll introduce each of them to you.

MEET BALLARD METCALFE (UCLA, ANDERSON SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT)

I grew up in rural Kentucky. I went to Princeton for undergrad, where I was very involved in music, the band, and LGBT life. I received my B.S.E. in civil engineering, and since graduating, I have been working for 3 years in San Diego for T.Y. Lin International, which is a global infrastructure design company. I have worked on a wide variety of projects in multiple roles, including researching for feasibility studies, writing environmental reports, performing road and bridge design, providing marketing support for proposals and pursuits, and managing subconsultants and technicians. Outside of work, I love to travel, and I love trying new restaurants and new recipes.

What made you consider business school?
I had always loved engineering, and so after graduation I really embraced my field in earnest. After several years of gaining of exposure to many different aspects of engineering, I felt that I had many other skills that were being underutilized. I am hoping that business school will give me the platform to me develop these skills that I can then meld with the enjoyable problem-solving aspects of engineering to solve complex business challenges. I also wanted to connect with other peers who could help me in this journey.

What are you most excited about in terms of your time in business school?
I am really looking forward to getting to learn from a very diverse group of classmates.

Who are some leaders (in business, in the LGBT community, in society) that most inspire you?
Pope Francis for his willingness to be on the streets, listen to diverse voices, and challenge the status quo. Warren Buffett for his honesty, transparency, wisdom, and humility. Shirley Tilghman – the past president of Princeton – for her thoughtful, inclusive leadership of the university. Ellen DeGeneres for her bravery to be an LGBT trailblazer, even in the face of serious professional adversity. Anderson Cooper for his courage and sincerity.

What’s one thing everyone should know about you?
I am an avid baker and brunch maker.

Meet the LGBT MBA Fellows: Andrew Jancaric

The Reaching Out LGBT MBA Fellowship is a scholarship and leadership development program for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and active ally MBAs in full-time programs.  Each Fellows receives at least $10,000 funding per academic year (or $20,000 total for his/her/their two years) in addition free lifetime access to all Reaching Out programming (including the ROMBA Conference), LGBT mentors, and a leadership summit exclusively for the Fellows.  

This fall Reaching Out welcomed the second class of the Reaching Out LGBT MBA Fellows.  These 44 fellows come from 30 top business schools and over the next month we’ll introduce each of them to you.

MEET ANDREW JANCARIC (University of California, Los Angeles, Anderson School of Management)

Prior to starting his MBA at the UCLA Anderson School of Management, Andrew spent three years working for BASF, the worlds largest chemical company.  At BASF, Andrew completed the rotation-based professional development program and learned how large corporations evaluate and implement major capital investments.  Through roles in strategic planning and capital project execution, he built a functional skill set that has served him well throughout his MBA journey.  Andrews involvement with LGBT advocacy began when he was studying chemical engineering at Texas A&M University, a school widely ranked as one of the least LGBT-friendly campuses in the nation. In this environment, he recognized the need to effect positive change in the campus culture.  He became the Vice President of A&Ms largest LGBT student group and the only openly LGBT member of the student senate.  Working with transgender student advocates and his student senate colleagues, he successfully persuaded the university administration to add gender identity and expression to the universitys non-discrimination policy.  Andrew was raised near Dallas, TX and has a deep passion for the food of his home state, including tex-mex, BBQ, and fried chicken.  He enjoys making craft beer with his dad and watching HGTV with his mom. He lives with his boyfriend and two other Anderson students in West LA.

What made you consider business school?
I have always believed that the best kind of investment you can make is an investment in yourself.  I see business school as a fantastic opportunity to expand my skill set, broaden my way of thinking, learn from accomplished individuals, and boost my career.

What are you most excited about in terms of your time in business school?
I am incredibly excited about the people that I am studying with. When I went to Andersons preview weekend, I got stuck on a crowded elevator with 13 other admits.  While we waited for the fire department to come rescue us, we all went around and introduced ourselves and what our pre-MBA stories were.  It was amazing to see how impressive and humble everyone in that elevator was. When we finally got rescued, we all agreed about two things: 1) one should never overload an elevator, and 2) if the rest of the class was as great as everyone in that elevator, the next two years would be amazing

Who are some leaders (in business, in the LGBTQ community, in society) that most inspire you?
Harvey Milk (and more recently Annise Parker) for showing the world that the LGBT community could lead, Sheryl Sandberg for showing how to lean in (even in the face of great personal tragedy), and Martin Luther King for being unafraid to speak truth to power.

What’s one thing everyone should know about you?
I love craft beer! My Dad and I are amateur home-brewers.

ROMBA Student Leader Profile: Ned Mitchell

In addition to Reaching Out’s staff, each year the Reaching Out LGBT MBA & Graduate Conference’s content is developed and produced by MBA & graduate students from schools across the world. These core group of the students working on the ROMBA Conference are known as the “Student Leadership Committee.”  The Leadership Committee comes up with the conference’s theme, ideates all breakout sessions, and is seen prominently on the ground at the conference!

Over the next few weeks we’ll highlight each of this year’s 11 organizers and share some of their tips for those planning to attend this year’s ROMBA Conference in Dallas (Oct 6-8)!  Not only will they tell you what they are most excited about for this year’s conference, but they’ll also give inbound LGBT MBA students tips on the summer internship search & experience!

How did your first year in business school prepared you for your summer internship?
Before I started my MBA, I had no idea that I wanted to work in tech or entertainment, let alone at the intersection of the two! My first year introduced me to a function that was a much better fit for who I am and helped me connect with peers, professors, and alums who are passionate about the industry I was passionate about. School also made me aware of (note that I didn’t say “an expert in”!) a number of tools and techniques that I recalled and dove into after starting my internship. Things you learn in school, whether that’s understanding incentive structures in an organization or cluster analysis in marketing, really add value to any team.

What experience(s) do you hope to take away from your Internship this summer?
A sense of resourcefulness that came from asking for meetings with people all across Amazon who I thought might have a unique insight for my project. A sense of ownership that came from making decisions myself as long as I could explain them with data. And a need for speed – failing fast feels so much better than failing slowly!

What’s the most valuable piece of advice going into summer internships you can offer the Class of 2018?
Learn and absorb! It’s one of the rarest opportunities you’ll have in your life to grow quickly.

What are you most excited about for 2016 ROMBA Conference?
This will be the best conference ever – how could I not be excited?

Any advice you have for people going into the ROMBA Conference for the first time?
Take any and every meeting and coffee chat you can. Opportunities will develop in the weeks and months after ROMBA as a result of your simply doing that. Also, you can (and should!) still follow a path that is wholly your own at any size company, not just the smaller ones. Get the inside scoop from people working at these companies about the scale and impact they feel their work touches on, how dynamically they think, and how much support they get from their managers to do things that are outside of the box.
