Meet Our 2019 Cohort of Fellows: Brian Amabile

UCLA, Anderson School of Management

Brian is an incoming MBA candidate in the Class of 2021 at the UCLA Anderson School of Management. Originally from Florham Park, New Jersey, Brian attended Villanova University where he then developed a passion for finance and economics. Upon graduation, he moved to New York City to pursue a career in investment banking. For the past four years, he has worked at Cowen in a variety of roles, most recently as an associate in the Private Capital Solutions group, where his team specialized in arranging private financing solutions across the capital structure for mid-cap companies in a variety of industries including the consumer, healthcare, industrial, energy and technology spaces. After business school, he hopes to pivot to a functional role at the intersection of finance and strategy in a consulting or a corporate rotational role. In his personal life, Brian is passionate about travel, hiking, skiing, music and film.

What made you consider business school?

Having only worked in finance, I knew that pursuing an MBA would offer me the opportunity to build upon my existing skill set but also broaden my framework of thought, opening myself up to new ways of thinking. I am also looking to build upon my leadership experience through the collaborative and experiential learning process, to ultimately become more impactful, influential, and supportive in whatever role I end up in next.

What are you most excited about in terms of your time in business school?

I am most excited about the opportunity to meet and learn from my fellow classmates, as we all come from such diverse backgrounds, culturally and professionally. I am also excited to explore new potential career industries and functions (also not to mention enjoying the Los Angeles weather).

Who are some leaders (in the LGBTQ community, in business, or in society) that most inspire you?

Tim Cook, the Obamas, Billie Jean King, Robbie Rogers and Gus Kenworthy.

What's one thing everyone should know about you?

I love the outdoors and extreme sports - I used to pole vault and now enjoy everything from skydiving to skiing to bungy jumping!
